On March 2, 1899, President McKinley signed legislation creating the fifth National Park in the United States - Mt. Rainier National Park. The creation of this National Park removed much of the land from the National Forest System and local railroad companies so it would be protected from logging and clearing. Since these activities were increasing as the population continued to move out west, this protection came at an important time in our history.

As a result of President McKinley's actions, you are now able to visit and enjoy this 14,000 foot peak called Mt. Rainier. You can visit, hike, camp and climb all without having to own any of the 500 plus square miles of forest land. Instead, you can leverage the benefits of the National Park System. The President listened to the people that told him this area was unique and had to be protected as a service to the future generations.
